We Have Come a Long Way...

The history of Eden Roc Hotel dates back to 13th May 1957 when it was incorporated officially by the registry department in the colonial Kenyan government.  The hotel is built over a 22 acre beach plot in Malindi.  The main entrance is from Lamu Road.

The Von Menyhart family initially came to Kenya from Cologne, Germany as big game hunters, hunting in Tanzania and Kenya. They bought the property, which was initially a very small hotel, from a British couple and developed the Eden Roc Hotel, which has now grown to be the center of tourism in the northern tourist circuit.  Eden Roc Hotel is now a large tourist resort with lush tropical gardens on the endless beach that forms the Malindi Bay.  Mrs. Von Menyhart, who is also known as “Mama Maridadi”, because of her keen interest in the flowers and plants, is well known for the nice tropical gardens that the hotel is famous for.

Mr. and Mrs. Von Menyhart had a motto that said ‘Your holiday with us is our main concern and we are here to ensure that your dreams come true’.  With this in mind, they opened a discotheque, Club 28, for young holiday makers in 1977, which today is still famous throughout the country.  Club 28, which is next to the hotel provides for an active night life.

Eden Roc Hotel is 15 minutes from the Malindi Airport and 2 hours from the Mombasa International Airport.  We are a walking distance from the town center and shopping is easy and accessible.

Eden Roc Hotel has 150 double rooms, 15 suites and 44 standard rooms, which are all facing the sea.  The suites and double rooms all have air conditioning, while the standard rooms have ceiling fans.  They are all beautifully decorated with local material.  All the 15 suites have satellite television.  A television room is also available for guests with international channels and local channels ranging from Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, Kenya Television Network and Family TV among others.

The hotel offers an a la carte menu at its recently refurbished Dhow Grill Restaurant, while the main dining room serves as a breakfast and dinner room.  There are 3 bars located at various points.  The Safari Bar has satellite television on 2 big screens for in-house entertainment and sports events and a choice of numerous channels in various languages to the cosmopolitan tourists.

Eden Roc hotel boasts 2 newly renovated conference halls that cater for 100 and 30 participants respectively.  There is also a board room facing the sea and with a balcony, that can accommodate 20 participants.

The Von Menyhart family renovated the resort several times, the most recent being 1997, giving the hotel a new face to cater for the wishes of the ever changing needs of the tourists.  As a result, Eden Roc Hotel is a 3-star hotel but with 4-star services.  A recent improvement is the landscaping of 80,000 square meters of lush, spacious gardens, improving on the relaxing ambience.  A salt-water swimming pool has been added in addition to the 3 swimming pools already in use, and you can then relax under large palm trees and the famous casuarina trees.  Children are not forgotten as their playing field is in place, with swings and their own swimming pool.

For the fitness conscious tourists, Eden Roc Hotel has 2 floodlit tennis courts within the premises.  We also have indoor games including table tennis.  There is a massage facility as well as a newly opened salon and boutique.
